I am in my apartment in Amsterdam at the moment.
What inspires you?
Films inspires me a lot. I love going to the cinema, disappearing into another world for a moment.
Tell us about your project julian and jonathan
Throughout the last few years I have been photographing my half-brother (Jonathan) alone or together with his (and my) father. I’m interested in the “triangular” relationship between the three of us. My memories as a young child, of the relationship with my father, are now in a way mirrored in my half-brother. By photographing my half-brother I try to approach our unusual sibling-relationship which I am part of at a physical distance. This work is very much about me, and this part of my family, as well as the relationship between a relatively older father and his young child.
Has the project changed the relationship between the three of you?
I don’t know if the project has changed our relationship but when I photograph my father and half-brother, these are special moments between us. The relationship between Jonathan and me, and how he responds to me and my camera, does keep on changing while he is growing up.
It seems like relationships are central in your projects. How come?
For me relationships, and the intimacy and closeness between people, are one of the most important things in life. Looking at people and how they relate to each other is an endless source of inspiration for me.
Do you work on a new project at the moment? Tell us more!
Apart from my ongoing projects, which I keep working on, I am planning to continue a series that I made in 2005 called “First Loves”. This is a series of double portraits of 11-year-old boys and girls who are in a couple. I was interested in capturing something very vulnerable and fleeting: they belong together by dint of a agreement, but are unable to put this idea into practice, because they are still in their childhood.
In the new year I want to extend this project and photograph young couples in different countries.
Where and how do you celebrate Christmas?
I spend one day with my boyfriend’s family and the other with my own family.
