Tell us about your project Eyes As Big As Plates.
Eyes as big as Plates is the collaborative venture between Karoline Hjorth (Norway) and Riitta Ikonen (Finland), produced in collaboration with senior models from Norway, Finland, New York, France and most recently Iceland and Faroe Islands. Ikonen and Hjorth met during an artist residency in Sandnes, Norway in May 2011, where the first part of the series was produced in collaboration with local seniors, sailors, retired agronomes and 90-year old parachuters. The photographic series started out as a play on characters and protagonists from Nordic folklore, inspired by the Romantics’ celebration of imagination. Each image presents a solitary figure in a landscape, dressed in elements from surroundings that indicate neither time or place. As in a folktale where the forest could be any forest, and the sea could be any sea, the scenes in Eyes as Big as Plates encourage a sense of timelessness and universality. At the same time, suggestions of narrative enter in by incorporating glasses, footwear and clothing, revealing traces of the characters’ individuality and signs of contemporary living.
Costumes, materials, online presentations, participatory performances and photographs form a part of each episode, with new images continually added to the body of work.

R: Depends a lot where I am. Early mornings outside are brilliantly exotic as I rarely experience them.

When was the last time you failed at something?
R: I cut my own hair a couple of days ago.
K: I lost a game of Chess last night.
What moves you?
R+K: The outdoors. Nature in its natural state. The first encounter with generous, curious and open-minded people.
Recommend a song that inspires you.
R: Currently anything by Omar Soleyman.
K: Work Song by Nina Simone.
Do you have a work in progress? Tell us more.

R+K: Eyes as big as plates has been a full-time adventure in constant progress since the start in 2011, and I hope it will continue for years to come!
